Demographic Breakdown of Suicides

About the visualisation

This visualisation presents a comprehensive demographic analysis of suicide cases over time, highlighting patterns across age groups, gender, education levels, income categories, marital status, occupations, causes, and methods of suicide. It provides a multidimensional perspective on the socio-economic and behavioural factors associated with suicide trends.

Note(s) on the data:

  • The years for which data is available and unavailable for each category are indicated under the respective category heading.
  • For the year 2012, West Bengal did not provide disaggregated data for some categories such as cause and profession. Totals of these sub-categories do not match with total suicides.
  • Minor discrepancies in the data for 1984, 2008, 2012, and 2014 mean that the total across causes does not equal the reported total number of suicides.

Suicides by Age and Gender

About the visualisation

Note(s) on the data:

  • The age-group classifications used in the ADSI reports vary across the years. Consistent age-group categories are available only since the year 2014. Therefore, the age-wise visualisations in this dashboard include data only from 2014 onwards.

Causes of Suicides

About the visualisation

These visualisations depict the causes of suicide over time, enabling users to explore trends and patterns across different reported causes and compare their prevalence across years.

Note(s) on the data:

  • Certain cause categories have undergone changes in classification over time. For example, illness (previously reported as dreadful disease) and insanity were reported as separate categories before 2001. Since 2001, insanity/mental illness has been included under the broader illness category.
  • Minor discrepancies are present in the data for the years 1984, 2008, 2012, and 2014.
  • Cause data is not available for 2002.
