Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Khartoum, Sudan Legal Practitioner & Human Rights Defender
My greatest benefit, however, was the awareness with the socio-economic dimension of mental disability.
It very much enriched my knowledge and understanding of the main types, diagnosis, causes and treatment of mental disorders, and mechanisms required to promote, respect and protect rights of persons with mental disabilities as stipulated by international and regional human rights standards. My greatest benefit, however, was the awareness with the socio-economic dimension of mental disability; the stigma, exclusion and discrimination, and the huge cost and burden involved. Such knowledge is imperative to develop effective legislation, using the proposed procedures of drafting, adoption and implementation.
The concepts taught and shared learning generated first class discussion, attributed mostly to the gifted faculty, excellent course materials and case studies, experts’ teaching and facilitation, and of course enthusiastic contribution of fellow participants with their diversified backgrounds and experiences from around the globe. This has indeed enhanced the quality of the program and made it special. The Diploma was a great source of inspiration, it made me really think anew about what I am doing and how to bring this type of learning experience about, if yearn for making a difference. I would highly recommend it for people working with and advocating for rights of persons with mental disabilities.
